FIS ROLLERSKI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2002

SKIROLL CHAMPIONSHIPS: DOUBLE BRONZE TO ITALY

In the relay race which has closed the rollerski demonstration Italy increases itsown loot with two bronze medals thanks to the senior and junior men. Award Ceremony with the delivery of the World Cup won by Alfio Di Gregorio and Simone Paredi.

Press release 17/2002 of September 1st 2002

It had to be the day of the ransom for the Italian team to these Rollerski World Championship, with the relay race in the splendid frame of the rollerski track of Rapy-Verrayes, but the blue arrows have had to be satisfied with the third step of the platform, both in the senior and junior category. In the first one, the team composed by Alfio Di Gregorio, Mirco Collavo and Alberto Pertile, have not be able to beat the absolute Swedish dominion, which has relegated Germany to the second place in the sprint. Excellent the first fraction where Alfio Di Gregorio, winner of the World Cup of rollerki, after two laps has increased the frequency of push so much to select the ten group in alone five athletes. At the changing line Mirco Collavo, with an uproarious forcing, has reduced the leading group to three athletes only and after the last change Alberto Pertile has maintained the position, hoping to beat the fresh gold medal of the sprint, the Swedish Mikael Sjodin.

But to the last curve, Alberto has been closed between the Swedish and the German Puderbach and arriving on third position. In the junior race the usual one "tenth of according to" still pursues the blue team: Emanuele Sbabo has lost at the fotofinish the silver medal against the Danish Hebsgaard, after two fractions magistrally conducted by Simone Paredi and Roberto Ferraccin. On the other side Italian junior teamrecriminates a clear damage suffered by Sbabo, that has fallen down on the grass) because of a behavior ofLatvia. Noteworthy the good race realized by girls: Mateja Paulina, Ester Ribolzi and Mateja Bogatec that have won the junior relay race without medals because of the lack of the least number ( eight nations ). The Ukraine athlete win among the senior women followed by France (with Karine Philippot) and the Czech Republic.

Therefore on the splendid sporting track of Rapy (a ring 2 kilometers long, realized for rollerski particularly and which has made surprised all the athletes and that us unique in Europe) finish the second edition of the World Championship under the aegis FIS, a discipline destined to grow for the spectacular content that has shown in these five days of competitions and because of the athletic value of his protagonists. To this intention there are some polemics about the partecipation of " national cross-coutry teams" in a discipline that at the moment cannot boast of full time professionals and that evidently creates strong disparities in the final classifications.
Appreciations expressed by athletes and technicians about the organizational level, underlined even by the Dutch Gorge Brower, responsible FIS of the rollerski sector ("… the better skiroll event that I have ever seen…") and from Bengt Erik Bengtsson, high executive of the FIS ("… great hospitality of Aosta Valley …"). Great satisfaction also from Sandro Theodule that has been the head of a great organizational structure "… in a week of real sport,a great sport".
From the Italian team positive conclusion with a total of--- conquered medals that let Daniele D’ Incal and Monica Comi tell "… that the second place in the nations classifications is also worth of the many friendly companions present in the whole week of competitions". A positive position even remembered by the CT Pierluigi Papa, remained in Bologna to be close to his wife because their daughter Carlotta was borned two days ago: " Above all I am very e all for the future of Italian rollerski: we have great champions and above all young promises that make us hoping fine about tomorrow."

INTERVIEWS

George Brouwer (FIS)-Holland: I believe that the organization is the most important aspect of a competition and I think that there has been here an extraordinary planning. Second I would say that the maps are fundamental and the hospitality that has been excellent. I have already expressed my final judgment to the FIS and I have assigned positive evaluation to everything and it is the maximum that I could give.
I agree with the participation of professional cross-counrty skier at these competitions and I think that it represents a good integration.

Sandro Theodule (President of Comunità Montana): If I have to express some evaluations I say that sport has won and then I am very happy about the organization, it seems to me that everything has worked very well. I have received few phone calls, therefore the meaning is that everything has been all right. As administrator and on behalf of the administrators I hope and I wish that these places will not be remembered just because of sporting aspects but even for the mountain, that is our card and everything it offers ( skiing , climbing).
